Dear Art Institute Students, Staff and Faculty:
The Student Activity Center, Student Council and Student Clubs would like to wish you all a SAFE & Happy New Year!
How to have a SAFE NEW YEAR? Plan well. Don't just go out and find anything to do because there is a lot of craziness and unsafe behavior that happens on this particular night - it is best to plan accordingly. Decide your SAFE transportation OUT and HOME ahead of time. And most importantly: MODERATE! If you want to remember your wonderful New Years Eve, then you should take your time with your friends and make that midnight toast special.
And we encourage you to take your time to reflect on 2009 and all of your hard work and great relationships and developments that have come to pass. Even the little steps and small challenges overcome should be acknowledged. You're all working very hard on your education and other goals as well and deserve that self recognition going into 2010.
And if you're inspired to have RESOLUTIONS for 2010, don't make them unrealistic resolutions like, "I am going to never drink coffee again!" or "I'm going to run every day in 2010". All-or-nothing thinking rarely makes for good goal setting. Set a realistic and measurable goal for your resolutions that you can feel good about and then you'll be successful.
We're not saying don't have high expectations for your self, but have high expectations in smaller steps. Maybe say, "I'm going to be healthier in 2010, which means I'm going to work on drinking less coffee for the first few months of the year, then move onto researching and developing better eating habits and get a good work out at least once a week." I think you get my meaning: do what really works for you.
If you really are the kind of person that can say, "I'm going to start working out every day in 2010" then by all means go for it!...but that doesn't usually play out well for most people.
I look forward to a wonderful year of supporting your learning and development, planning and facilitating great events and activities and even more new clubs forming out of your own projects and interests.
I wish you all a SAFE & Happy New Year Celebration!
See you in 2010!
Sincerely,
Brad Huggins, Director of Student Development
on behalf of Student Activity Center, Student Council and Student Clubs.

I like that a lot, thanks - realistic goals are underrated in our society of multi-tasking workaholics. A balanced life is quite a challenge in and of itself! I'm thrilled to spend this New Year with the inspiring and amazing people at AIS.
